Acer has unveiled one of the most unusual gaming PC concepts at IFA 2026, and it could give portable computing a completely new direction. Called Project DualPlay Mini, the experimental device combines an 8-inch gaming handheld with a miniature laptop, allowing users to switch between gaming and productivity without carrying two separate machines.
Unlike conventional handheld gaming PCs that focus almost entirely on controllers and touchscreens, Acer’s concept is built around a clever flip-and-swivel mechanism. In handheld mode, it looks like a chunky portable gaming console with physical controls positioned around the display. Flip the device open and rotate the screen, however, and a built-in backlit keyboard is revealed underneath, transforming the machine into a tiny clamshell laptop.
One Device for Gaming and Work
The idea behind DualPlay Mini is surprisingly straightforward. Modern handheld gaming PCs are powerful enough to run Windows applications, but using them for tasks such as writing emails, editing documents or chatting can be awkward without a proper keyboard.
Acer’s concept attempts to solve that problem by physically building a keyboard into the device rather than requiring a separate accessory. The company describes it as a two-in-one machine designed for both handheld gaming and laptop-style productivity. Users can switch between the two configurations depending on what they need to do.
The tiny 8-inch display makes the device considerably smaller than a conventional notebook, but it also brings back memories of the netbook era. Acer is effectively combining that ultra-portable computer philosophy with the much more powerful hardware and gaming controls of today’s handheld PCs.
A Clever Flip-and-Swivel Design
The transformation is the most interesting part of DualPlay Mini. The display is mounted on a mechanism that allows it to flip and swivel between gaming and laptop configurations. When used as a handheld, the screen sits above the controls. When converted into laptop mode, the display moves into position above the keyboard while the gaming controls become part of the folded base.
Acer has also designed the device to work with a Bluetooth mouse, giving users a more familiar keyboard-and-mouse setup for productivity and games that benefit from precise controls. The concept can additionally connect to an external display, opening the possibility of using the compact PC as the core of a larger desktop workspace.
Cooling Is Built for Gaming
Keeping a small gaming computer cool is always a challenge, and Acer is using its Predator AeroBlade cooling technology for the DualPlay Mini concept. The system combines an ultra-thin metal fan with Vortex Flow technology, with Acer claiming up to 10% greater airflow compared with a conventional plastic fan under its internal testing conditions.
Acer has not revealed a complete specification sheet for the concept, so details such as the final processor, memory, storage and battery capacity remain unclear. Reports from IFA indicate that the prototype uses an Intel processor, but Acer has not announced a finalized retail configuration.
A Concept Rather Than a Product
For now, Project DualPlay Mini remains a concept rather than a product consumers can purchase. Acer has not announced a price, release date or confirmed plans for mass production. That makes the device more of a technology experiment than a direct competitor to products such as the Steam Deck or other mainstream Windows handhelds.
Still, the concept highlights where portable computing could be heading. Gaming handhelds are becoming increasingly capable, while users are looking for devices that can perform more than one role. Acer’s approach is unusual, but if the company can make the compact keyboard and rotating display practical enough, the DualPlay Mini could demonstrate how a single device might replace both a handheld console and a lightweight travel laptop.
For now, Acer is leaving that possibility open. But at IFA 2026, Project DualPlay Mini has certainly shown that the future of gaming handhelds may involve much more than simply playing games.
