Google Pixel Watch 5 Brings Advanced Health Tracking, Gemini AI and New Safety Features to Your Wrist

The Pixel Watch 5 is out, and Google is placing a far greater emphasis on what a smartwatch can actually do when it’s not simply tallying steps or throwing notifications at you. The new Pixel wearable has health, security and AI front and centre, transforming the watch into something built to discreetly keep an eye on your health and be there when it counts. The Pixel Watch 5 was announced on 12 August 2026.

The design remains similar, with a greater emphasis on proactive support and health tracking. Google claims it is ‘the smartest, most proactive and health focused Pixel Watch the company has ever launched’ with the addition of new Google Health features and the Gemini Intelligence and enhanced GPS. It was launched on 20 August.

One of the most significant changes is the new Google Health Guardian system. Instead of just providing the raw health data and letting users interpret for themselves the Pixel Watch 5 it will be tracking how those changes develop over time and highlighting relevant trends. Now, new monthly reports can now show users things like blood-pressure trend, sleep-breathing quality and insulin resistance trend. Perhaps the most impressive new feature is Breathing Emergency Detection. Per Google, this feature is meant to identify “indicators of a serious breathing emergency” and automatically activate a call to emergency services if the user doesn’t reply.

The company has likened the concept to being “like an airbag on your wrist”, with the feature designed to mitigate unforeseen health emergencies that would otherwise go unreported. Yet, the feature’s presence depends upon regional availability and approval. Pixel Watch 5 to build on Google’s broader move towards smartwatch-based emergency protection, the Pixel Watch 5 still has Loss of Pulse Detection in its safety tech arsenal, even as the Pixel Watch family now has access to a range of features like Satellite SOS supported in select locations.

While Satellite SOS was first available on the Pixel Watch 4 with the 3rd-generation Pixel Watch last year expanded its network of regions it’s available in earlier this year, as it is part of the expansion of Google’s large safety ecosystem. Google is also making a significant promise for location accuracy for fitness users.

Pixel Watch 5 aims to deliver on this by combining satellite data, 3D modelling of environments and real-time corrections to the atmosphere to enable more precise GPS tracking. Google states this will lead to ”our most accurate GPS route tracking to date, even in challenging environments like dense cityscapes and under forest canopies” Artificial Intelligence is also another significant of the experience. The watch is based on the Gemini Intelligence, so it can be accessed as a voice-based companion anywhere on your wrist.

Even Google’s ‘At a Glance’ feature could show situationally aware information, like in the airport when seeing your boarding pass, or details of where you are going. The idea is to show less of a miniature smartphone display and more like a device that actually knows where you are and what you need.
