Stanford Scientists Uncover Natural Molecule That Mimics Ozempic Without the Usual Side Effects

Scientists at a lab in Stanford Medicine have discovered a naturally-produced molecule that seems to decrease the desire to eat and facilitate weight loss – in the same way as weight-loss medications like Ozempic – but the molecule does not cause digestive complaints that are commonly tied to drug therapy. This finding has been described as a “measured excitation” by researchers who have always been looking out for “safer” ways for obesity and related metabolic conditions to be handled. The molecule seems to act in a way with the body processes that signal the brain you want to eat. Early stage studies on lab models and mice, that were done by scientists, showed that the amount of food consumed was reduced and that the weight of test subjects had dropped without their becoming ill or vomiting in response to the molecule as it happened in GLP-1 receptor agonist patients with side effects.

Scientists who are working with the development described the compound as something of the body’s own, which is produced in small amounts. If that assumption is correct, the substance could be used by the body in a natural state without making the individual’s system work extra. The fact of a natural replacement for weight-loss injectables like semaglutide is attractive for the millions of people who have tried these medications or were thinking to take them. Users of currently available weight-loss injectables say they achieve desired weight loss but on the flip side often complain of side effects that affect their life, and some users have discontinued treatment due to these. And, others express their concern about the side effects of these medication if used long term and it is still under a study phase.
